Wagamama develops Mamago spin-off brand
Restaurant giant TRG have announced that Asian-style restaurant Wagamama is developing a “grab and go” concept, called Mamago, which will be released later this year.
Wagamama have been trialling an app in South London that allows customers to order from a specific delivery kitchen in Battersea. It appears that the app will be extended across other kitchens too, after the trial was deemed a success.
The Wagamama brand was acquired by TRG – who own the likes of Chiquito and Frankie and Benny’s – last year for £559m, and over the last three weeks, the restaurant increased like-for-like sales by 9.1%. TRG expect to open three or four new restaurants in the UK in 2019, though dozens of Frankie & Benny’s restaurants are set to be closed by the company.
“Wagamama benefits from a high-quality leadership team which operates the business as a standalone entity and has the freedom to cultivate its unique cohesive culture,” TRG said in a report on their website. “The business has won a tender for a site in Heathrow Terminal 3 which is due to open in the second half of this year. The business is also exploring a variety of other airport opportunities.”
The are 190 Wagamama restaurants with 130 being in the UK. The brand has spread throughout Europe to the likes of Spain and Italy, and even as far afield as New Zealand, Oman, Qatar and UAE. TRG opened a new restaurant in Murray Hill, New York in the last year, and will open another in Midtown Manhattan in the Summer.
Like-for-like sales for TRG were down 2.0% in 2018, with total sales up 1.0% to £686.0m.
