What is public liability insurance?
Small business owners can often find it difficult to figure out exactly what sort of business insurance they need. One of the most common types of business insurance is public liability.
Public liability insurance basically protects you and your business from compensation payments and legal costs which may arise from the following:
- Injuries to contractors, clients or members of the public caused by you or one of your employees.
- Damage to possessions owned by contractors, clients or members of the public caused by you or one of your employees.
- Damage to the property of contractors, clients or members of the public caused by you or one of your employees.
What can Public liability cover for you?
Cover can be tailored to meet your particular requirements. Although under UK law public liability insurance is not currently a legal requirement, you may find that if you plan to work within the public sector that it a contract condition. However, even if you work exclusively within the private sector, whatever your business type, it’s prudent to have public liability insurance, particularly if you are, for example, a tradesman, shop owner or hairdresser.
Public liability insurance will cover you for a range of circumstances; from spilling a soft drink onto a client’s laptop to omitting to put a wet floor sign in place when you are cleaning resulting in a member of the public slipping and incurring a nasty injury.
To summarise, it will cover you from relatively minor workplace incidents up to more expensive accidents that have the potential to financially ruin you and your business; so it’s an extremely helpful business insurance policy to have if your business involves working with the general public.
