Employer’s liability insurance: why it benefits you and your staff

Employer’s liability insurance is an important consideration for every business. For companies with employees, liability insurance is a legal requirement, and the advantages and benefits associated with it are significant. In addition, businesses that do not have it face very serious consequences.

If you are trading as a Limited Company and you employ just one member of staff or more, it is your legal obligation to be insured. The minimum level of cover allowed by law is £5 million, although most insurers provide at least £10 million of cover. When you take out a policy you receive a certificate from your insurance provider, which must be displayed so that all your employees can see it. You may do this electronically if you prefer, for example by making a copy available online.

Employer’s liability insurance helps to safeguard the financial security of your business if one of your employees suffers an accident at work for which you could be considered liable. The policy pays for the cost of any compensation that your employee may be awarded, and sometimes may also pay for legal costs and miscellaneous expenses; for example; transportation by ambulance.

An employer’s liability policy also gives your staff security. They can carry out their duties safe in the knowledge that if an accident were to occur they would be financially compensated.  Business owners need to carry out good risk management and health and safety practices. However, accidents do sometimes happen and employer’s liability insurance gives you and your employee’s peace of mind that, should the worst happen, your business will be able to withstand the cost of providing your employees with the care and financial compensation that they deserve.
